MacWhisper review (2026): excellent local transcripts, and a separate step for notes

MacWhisper runs Whisper on your Mac, records calls without a bot, and sells Pro as a one-time purchase. AI summaries are optional and often use your own cloud API key. A review of when it is the right tool.

MacWhisper is a genuinely good transcription app. It runs Whisper locally on your Mac, it can record a call in the background without a bot, and the Pro licence is a one-time purchase rather than a seat you rent. For audio files, interviews, lectures, and a clean text record of a meeting, it is one of the tools we would tell you to buy even though we make something else.

It is a transcription tool. Structured meeting notes are a second step, and that step is often not local unless you set it up to be. If you came here from “MacWhisper review” because you want a summary and action items with no API key, read the summaries section before you decide. The longer version of “use it for files, use something else for notes” is MacWhisper alternatives.

Details match MacWhisper’s published pages as used on this site, rechecked 16 September 2026. The EUR 64 Pro price was verified in July 2026 and rechecked then. Prices change.

Who MacWhisper is for

MacWhisper is for someone on a Mac who wants the words. Journalists transcribing interviews, researchers with a folder of audio, anyone who already thinks in transcripts and will edit them. It is also a fair recommendation when the budget is a single licence and the privacy requirement is “do not upload the audio to a notetaker’s cloud.”

It is the wrong recommendation for Windows, for a team workspace, and for people who want the meeting to come out as decisions and action items without configuring a language model.

What MacWhisper does well

File transcription. This is the job it wins. Drop in audio, run a local Whisper model, get a transcript. Bulk files, larger models, and more languages are where it is stronger than a meeting assistant, including ours. Private Notetaker is English only and is not a file-transcription workbench. If that is the work, buy MacWhisper.

Call recording without a bot. It records Zoom, Teams, Webex, and other calls in the background on the Mac. Nothing joins the participant list. The recording stays in the transcription workflow on your machine.

A real one-time price for the transcript. The free version uses the smaller models. Pro is EUR 64 once, on the price we rechecked. You are not on a per-seat monthly plan to keep transcribing. That is rare and it is worth naming.

You can keep summaries local, if you do the work. Ollama or LM Studio is a documented path. The app did not hide the cloud option. It lets you choose.

How it works

Whisper runs on the Mac. Transcription works offline. Call audio is captured on the machine, not by a bot in the meeting. Transcripts stay on the Mac.

AI summaries are optional. One path is a local model you run yourself. The other is a cloud provider, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and others, with an API key you supply. With the key, the transcript text goes to that provider. The audio already stayed local. The text of what was said did not.

That design keeps MacWhisper simpler and lets you pick a model. It also means a workflow that feels local can have a cloud step in the middle. If you adopted it so that recordings would not leave the machine, check which summary path you turned on.

There is no Windows version.

The licence covers the app. Cloud summaries are metered by the provider behind your key. A one-time Pro purchase plus heavy API use is not “free summaries forever.” Local summaries avoid that meter and cost you the setup and the hardware.

Confirm MacWhisper’s site before you buy. We would rather send you there than freeze a price that can move.

Privacy and compliance

Transcription on the device is the privacy claim, and it is a true one. MacWhisper is not a cloud notetaker that happens to have a desktop app. The audio for that step stays on the Mac.

The summary path is the part to configure on purpose. An API key is permission to send the transcript to that company. A local model is the path that keeps the notes on the machine too.

We do not make a HIPAA claim about MacWhisper, and Private Notetaker does not claim HIPAA certification either. Local processing means the notetaker company does not hold the audio. It is not a certification. Recording still needs whatever consent your state or country requires. A missing bot does not lower that bar. See meeting recording consent laws.

Who should skip MacWhisper

Skip it on Windows. Skip it if you will not run Ollama or LM Studio and you also refuse to send transcripts to an API. In that gap, MacWhisper gives you an excellent transcript and stops. Skip it if you need team search. None of the local tools, including ours, replace a Fireflies-style workspace.

Stay if you are on a Mac and the transcript is the deliverable. That is a large, real group of people, and MacWhisper serves them better than we do.

When Private Notetaker is the better fit

Private Notetaker is the better fit when the job is the meeting, not the file: a transcript, a summary, and action items, both models on the computer, no API key, and no cloud mode to configure. It runs on Mac (Apple Silicon) and Windows. It works offline for the whole pipeline, not only the transcription half.

Pricing is $15 a month or a $149 lifetime license, with a 7-day trial and no card required. MacWhisper Pro is the cheaper one-time buy if all you need is the transcript. Our lifetime license is how you avoid an ongoing subscription for the notes workflow. The $15 monthly plan is there if you would rather not pay upfront.

Use MacWhisper for bulk files, bigger Whisper models, and more languages. Use Private Notetaker when you want the notes without assembling the summary step, including on Windows.

Frequently asked questions

Is MacWhisper worth it?
Yes, if you want local transcription of files, interviews, or calls on a Mac. The free version covers smaller models. Pro was listed at EUR 64 once when we rechecked it on 16 September 2026. It is the wrong tool if you need structured meeting notes without setting up a model, or if you are on Windows.
Is MacWhisper private?
Transcription is. Whisper runs on your Mac, so that step does not upload audio. Optional AI summaries are separate: a local model through Ollama or LM Studio, or a cloud provider such as OpenAI or Anthropic with your own API key. Local transcription and local AI notes are two claims.
Does MacWhisper work on Windows?
No. MacWhisper is Mac only. Private Notetaker runs on Mac and Windows, with transcription and summaries on the device. Meetily is an open-source option with Windows installers if you are willing to set it up.
Does MacWhisper join meetings with a bot?
No. It can record Zoom, Teams, Webex, and other calls in the background on your Mac, so nothing appears in the participant list. You still need consent to record. A missing bot does not change that.
How much does MacWhisper cost?
A free version uses the smaller models. MacWhisper Pro is a one-time purchase, EUR 64 as verified for this site in July 2026 and rechecked 16 September 2026. Cloud summaries are extra usage you pay the AI provider for, on top of that licence.
