Pandecho review (2026): a local Mac and Windows notetaker, priced once or at $10 a month
Pandecho transcribes and summarizes on your computer, with no meeting bot, on macOS and Windows. Lifetime licences start at $79 for one device, or $10 a month. A sourced review of a real local peer, including where it differs from Private Notetaker.

Pandecho is a local meeting-notes app for Mac and Windows, and it is trying to do the same job we are. It records without a bot, transcribes on the computer, and writes a summary, decisions, and action items with a model on the machine. It also lets you pay once. If you searched for a private alternative to Otter or Granola and landed on Pandecho, the product you found is a real one, not a cloud app with a local sticker.
We build Private Notetaker. This review is the honest version of the comparison, from Pandecho’s own site as checked 22 September 2026. Where they are ahead, they are ahead.
Who Pandecho is for
Someone who wants meeting notes on the computer, on macOS 14 or later (Apple Silicon) or Windows 10 and 11, and who would rather the audio did not go to a notetaker’s cloud. The site aims it at the same confidential calls everyone in this category names: sales, one to ones, client conversations. Templates for standups, interviews, discovery, and real estate are part of the pitch, if you want the note shaped before you start.
It is a weaker fit if you need a team workspace, a CRM, or a vendor that will sign a BAA. Pandecho does not advertise those, and neither do we. It is also a weaker fit if you want no optional path that can send the transcript to ChatGPT. That option is in the product.
What Pandecho does well
The full notes pipeline, on the device, on both platforms. Transcript, summary, decisions, owner-tagged action items. The site says this runs locally, including in airplane mode, when you use the on-device model. Mac and Windows are both shipping apps, not a “Windows coming soon” line. A lot of otherwise good local tools are Mac only. Pandecho is not.
No bot. Capture is on the computer. The comparison table says system audio plus the microphone. The walkthrough also talks about the mic and the room, which is the in-person case. Nothing joins Zoom, Meet, Teams, or Webex. Participants do not see a notetaker.
Languages beyond English. The FAQ says on-device transcription uses Parakeet V3, with English and major European languages. Another section of the same page says “local Whisper.” We are not going to pretend those sentences are the same model. The FAQ is the specific claim: Parakeet V3, English and major European languages. Private Notetaker is English only. If you transcribe French or German meetings, that gap is theirs to win until you have tested both.
Pay once, with a cheaper single-device price. $79 for one device, $149 for three, $399 for ten, or $10 a month for one device. Future updates are included on the lifetime licence, per the FAQ. Volume pricing for several computers is something our single $149 licence does not try to match. Do the arithmetic for how many machines you actually have.
Files and agents. Notes as files you own, templates, calendar titles from Google and Outlook, full-text search, audio playback synced to the transcript, an MCP server and a CLI so a local assistant can query meetings, and webhooks when a meeting is processed. That is a long feature list. We have not verified each item in the app. We are telling you what the site publishes, because it is a real product surface and pretending it is a thin wrapper would be unfair.
How it works
You record a meeting or an in-person conversation. Speech-to-text and speaker labels are computed on the machine. A local language model turns the transcript, and any rough notes you typed, into the summary. The site’s privacy FAQ is the clearest sentence: audio is not uploaded; summaries and chat are either the local model or, optionally, your own ChatGPT account; there is no Pandecho server in the middle of the meeting and no bot.
Optional ChatGPT is the clause to read twice. The local model is the private path and the offline path. ChatGPT is a cloud path you choose, and it needs a connection. The page says only that optional mode requires the network. If you never turn it on, the published claim is that the meeting stays on the computer.
The page also shows a “network activity” demo with zero bytes uploaded. Treat that as marketing illustration of the local mode, not as an audit. The test that matters is still airplane mode, on your machine, with ChatGPT left off.
Pricing
As published 22 September 2026 on pandecho.com:
| What the FAQ says | |
|---|---|
| Monthly | $10 a month for 1 device |
| Lifetime | $79 for 1 device, $149 for 3, $399 for 10 |
| Trial | Free to start. The page says there is a free trial and does not state a day count on the section we used |
Confirm the pricing page. One-time software prices move, and a free trial with no published length is something to check at download.
Privacy and compliance
The architecture they describe is the one that matters for this category: models on the computer, files on disk, no bot, no vendor account required to take notes. Optional ChatGPT is a deliberate exit from that architecture. It is labelled as optional. It is still an exit.
We did not find a HIPAA claim on the page. Do not infer one. Private Notetaker does not claim HIPAA certification either. On-device processing means the vendor does not hold the audio. It is not a certification, for them or for us. Check your profession.
Consent is unchanged because the software is local. Meeting recording consent laws apply to a laptop microphone the same way they apply to a bot.
Who should skip Pandecho
Skip the ChatGPT toggle if the requirement is that the app cannot send the transcript out. Skip it if you need organisation-wide search or a CRM. Skip it if you need a signed BAA from the vendor. A local app does not become that contract.
Stay if you want local meeting notes on Mac and Windows, especially in languages Parakeet covers, and the $79 single-device licence or the $10 monthly plan is the price you wanted. For that reader, Pandecho is a credible choice, and it would be silly to claim otherwise.
When Private Notetaker is the better fit
Both apps are trying to be the on-device meeting assistant: transcript, summary, and action items, no bot, Mac and Windows, a monthly plan and a lifetime option. The useful differences are narrower than a cloud-versus-local comparison.
Choose Pandecho if you want the languages they claim, the $79 one-device lifetime price, per-device volume pricing, or the option to send a summary through your own ChatGPT account. Choose Private Notetaker if you want a product whose only mode is on-device notes, with no cloud summary switch, a stated 7-day trial, and no card.
Our price is $15 a month or a $149 lifetime license. The monthly plan is real. The lifetime license is how you avoid an ongoing subscription. Pandecho also publishes a one-time price, and for a single device it is lower.
Private Notetaker is English only. Install both trials if the decision is close. The airplane-mode test is the same for each: wifi off, ChatGPT left off on Pandecho, and see whether the summary still appears.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Pandecho private?
- Pandecho's site says transcription runs on the computer and audio is not uploaded. Summaries use an on-device model, or optionally your own ChatGPT account. The local model works offline. The ChatGPT option needs the network and sends text to that account. There is no meeting bot.
- How much does Pandecho cost?
- As published on pandecho.com on 22 September 2026: $10 a month for one device, or a one-time licence at $79 for one device, $149 for three, or $399 for ten. There is a free trial. Lifetime licences include future updates, according to the site. Confirm the page before you buy.
- Does Pandecho work on Windows and Mac?
- Yes. The site says macOS 14 and later on Apple Silicon, and Windows 10 and 11. That cross-platform local design is the same shape as Private Notetaker.
- Does Pandecho join meetings with a bot?
- No. It captures audio on the computer. Other participants do not see a Pandecho bot. You still need consent to record.
- How is Pandecho different from Private Notetaker?
- Both aim at on-device transcripts, summaries, and action items, with no bot, on Mac and Windows, and both offer a monthly plan and a lifetime licence. Pandecho's site says on-device transcription uses Parakeet V3 for English and major European languages, and that ChatGPT summaries are optional. Private Notetaker is English only, has no cloud summary mode, and costs $15 a month or $149 once, with a 7-day trial and no card. Private Notetaker does not claim HIPAA certification.
